The widow of the Newspaper vendor killed by one of the security details attached to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Josephine Okereke has distanced herself from the lawsuit filed by relatives of the deceased demanding five hundred million naira as compensation.
Speaking at a news conference in Abuja, Mrs Okereke stated that she was not consulted by her late husband’s family on the issue, and only became aware of the development through the media that they had filed a suit seeking justice for the deceased.
According to her, she equally wants justice for her late husband but the speaker’s gesture of handing the suspect over to appropriate authorities and setting up a trust fund for her and her children made such a lawsuit unnecessary.
The President of the Abuja Newspaper Distributors Association of Nigeria, Comrade Benji Obidan, who also distanced the association from the lawsuit, called on Government to ensure that the perpetrator is brought to book.
The Legal Adviser to the Association, Wilfred Okol, advised Government officials to subject their security operatives to psychological examination to ascertain their mental stability.
