The Women Commission, Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, has called for stiffer penalty for sexual offenders to combat the rising cases of sexual and gender-based violence in the Country.
The president of the Commission, Comrade Hafsat Shaibu, made the call at a road walk in Abuja.
Comrade Hafsat who noted that many perpetrators of rape always believed they could get away with the act, called for the implementation of all existing policies to curb rape.
She however, urged victims to speak up.
On his part, the President, Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, Comrade Quadri Olaleye, said all hands must be on deck in tackling sexual and gender-based violence in the country.
In a remark, the Chairman, Trade Union Congress, FCT Chapter, Comrade Amodu Olayinka, who hailed the recent death sentence of a rapist in Kano State, urged government to step up efforts towards ending stigmatization against rape victims.
The participants who were drawn from the academia and civil society groups, advised parents to always monitor their children and wards.
