Stakeholders at a one day Dialogue on food system and policy have called on the Federal Government to put in place an effective policy that will support small scale farmers to enhance agriculture and grow the nation’s economy.
They made the call at a dialogue organised by a Non-Governmental Organisation, Health of Mother Earth Foundation,HOMEF in Abuja
The dialogue discussed barriers to better food system, guiding principles and recommendations towards promoting sustainable food systems in the country.
The Director of HOMEF, Mr Nnimmo Bassey explained that there was need for government to look into the various policies regarding farming,seeds and other practices for improved agricultural products.
He said that for Nigeria to achieve enhanced agricultural production, government needed to support farmers at the grassroots and adopt workable agricultural policy framework.
Also, the National Publicity Secretary of the Association of Cashew farmers aggregators and processors Yunusa Enemali and the founder of Network of Women in Agriculture Nigeria, Mrs Lovelyn Ejim emphasized the need for the inclusion of farmers at the grassroots in policy decision making process on agriculture.
On her part,a nutritionist Mrs Jackie Ikeotuonye maintained that government and other stakeholders must monitor food production from cultivation to consumption for sustainability.
