Scholars, Participants Hail NICO For Sustaining ARTCO Prog

Scholars and Participants at the 2021 Edition of Annual Roundtable On Cultural Orientation, ARTCO, have commended the National Institute for Cultural Orientation, NICO, for sustaining the programme over the years.

One of the Scholars and Guest Speaker from the Department of History and International Studies, University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Professor Jawondo Abdulganiyu said the programme had further broadened the knowledge of media professionals on the reportage of culture as a veritable tool for national development.

Speaking on the topic “Culture and Inter Ethnic Relations: An Overview”, Professor Abdulganiyu stated that media professionals have a greater role to play in the task of uniting Nigerians through objective and balance reportage using the instrumentality of the nation’s cultural values and heritage.

Another Guest Speaker from the Department of Mass Communication, University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Associate Professor Saadat Bekki advised media organizations to shun sensationalism in the reportage of security matters to avoid escalation of problems in the country.

According to her, part of the social responsibilities of media organizations is to unite the people towards ensuring a prosperous and developed Nigeria

On his part, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Kwara State Chapter, Comrade Ahmed Lateef expressed concern over indiscriminate use of social media by some unpatriotic Nigerians describing the situation as unhealthy for national peace and development.

Comrade Ahmed Lateef therefore called on journalists to always give priority to national interest and shun selfish ambition in the discharge of their duties.

Some of the participants, Biola Azeez of Tribune Newspaper and Damilola Johnson, NTA called for more funding of NICO’s activities to further ensure the growth of the nation’s cultural sector.

In a remark, the Executive Secretary of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation, NICO, Mr Ado Yahuza said the Institute would not relent in sensitizing media professionals towards achieving the developmental goals of the country.

Mr Ado Yahuza therefore enjoined the participants to always put into practice the lessons and gains of ARTCO towards complementing the efforts of NICO in harnessing culture for national development.

The theme of the ARTCO 2021 is “Culture, Media and National Cohesion in Nigeria”
