Environmental Sanitation Mobile Court in Nasarawa State has prosecuted 42 persons for violating the monthly environmental sanitation laws in the State.
Chief Prosecutor of the Court, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed said the offenders were arrested at various locations in Lafia metropolis engaging in their private businesses during the stipulated time for the environmental sanitation.
Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed who is also the Chief Environment Officer in the State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources stated that the suspects were prosecuted in line with the provision of Section nine, subsection two of the Nasarawa State Environmental Sanitation Law.
He pointed out that the environmental sanitation offenders were convicted and sentenced to between two and four months imprisonment with option of fines.
Acting Permanent Secretary, Nasarawa State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. Jonathan Kwaghkaha described the level of compliance with the monthly environmental sanitation as impressive.
Mr Kwaghkaha noted that the State Government had strengthened the capacity of the environmental inspectors and deployed them to areas that were not previously covered during the exercise to ensure compliance.
He called on residents of the State to always keep their environment clean as part of measures to check the spread of the second wave of COVID-19 and other diseases.
The Permanent Secretary, added that the monthly environmental sanitation was shifted backward idue due to the Christmas celebration.
