The House of Representatives has queried the Federal Ministry of Transportation over its failure to effect implementation of the National Road Safety Policy in the country.
Members of the House committee on Safety Standards and Regulations chaired by Ibrahim Hamza gave the query at an interactive session with the Minister who was represented by the Director Transport Planning and Coordination, Federal Ministry of Transportation, Dr. Mercy Ilori, who failed to give the committee the needed answers.
The lawmakers noted that failure of the technocrats in the ministry to implement the existing National Road Safety Policy, is the major bane of daily road crashes witnessed in the country.
Earlier, the Director Transport, Planning and Coordination, Federal Ministry of Transportation, Mercy Ilori who represented the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Ameachi, told the committee that the ministry is currently putting in place safety measures in the land, air, rail and water transport sector.
The Chairman of the Committee, Ibrahim Hamza who said the right to safe and healthy working conditions remains a basic human right by law, lamented that this has not received the adequate attention it deserves as most accidents and injuries at work places were largely due to disregard for safety Measures & Standards.
