REPS: Bill To Amend Matrimonial Clauses Act Passes 2nd Reading

The House of Representatives has passed for second reading a bill for an act to amend the Matrimonial Causes Act to increase the amount to be paid as penalty.

The bill which seeks to review the figures to bring the provisions of the Act back to realistic expectations and demands is sponsored by Chidoka Obinna from Anambra State.

Leading the debate the lawmaker explained that the amendment became necessary as the exiting law had become outdated.

In her submission Aisha Dukku from Gombe state stressed the need for the charges to be reviewed in favour of women to ensure Justice, equity and fairness as this was missing in the existing legislature.

Ruling on the motion the deputy speaker Ahmed Wase who presided over plenary mandated the appropriate committee to seek further legislative measures for prompt action.
