Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Nasarawa State Chapter has appealed to Governor Abdullahi Sule to intervene in the lingering non release of funds by Local Government Council Chairmen to pay gratuities and pensions of retirees in the State.
Chairman of the Union in the State, Alhaji Musa Obakpa made the appeal during a media briefing to mark this year’s Pensioners Day in Lafia.
Alhaji Musa Obakpa said retirees especially in Local Governments in the State had continued to be subjected to hardship due to non-payment of their entitlements hence the need for the State Government to prevail on them to prioritize welfare of Pensioners.
He called on the Governor to expedite action and review upward the wages for pensioners in line with the provision of the law as according to him, their entitlements no longer cater for their basic needs considering the economic realities in the country.
The Chairman also stressed the need for Federal and State Governments to ensure regular remittance of their counter part funds into the Local Government Pension Fund as part of steps towards giving Retirees a new lease of life.
Alhaji Musa Obakpa however ,commended Governor Abdullahi Sule for restoring full payment of monthly pensions especially for State Government retirees as against the percentage payment which used to be the case before he assumed office.
