The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has been advised to implement Electricity regulations in the country .
Guests on “Perspectives” a kapital Fm current Affairs programme gave the advice while discussing on the hike in electricity tariffs in the country.
One of the Guests, A public Affairs Analyst and Entrepreneur, Mr Stanley Ebose explained that such regulations would improve accessibility as well as promote reliable and affordable electricity for consumers in the country.
“If by peradventure we are paying this much let there be regulations to enforce it”
Another guest, An Energy Analyst and Expert, Mr Kayode Oyebisi also called for the review of the multi year Tariff order (MYTO) which he explained would enhance effective service delivery in the sector.
“Multi Year Tariff Order is part of the Law that governs privatized power sector every five years”
He stressed that review doesn’t mean price but issues such as what consumers need at a particular period as well as the type of service being rendered to the public.
On the issue of arbitrary increase of Electricity Tariff and estimated billing systems in the country, Mr Oyebisi called for the adequate provision of meters for consumers.
“The Discos want to remain in business profitability and service you better, the issue of meter is what they should now rapidly do so that everybody can have access to it unhindered “.
Also one of the discusstants, the General Manager Corporate Communications Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Mr Oyebode Fadipe identified energy theft as a major challenge confronting the power sector.
