Gunmen alleged to be policemen have fired gunshots in the air at Dei-Dei, a suburb in the FCT , to disperse the FCT Mobile Court sitting in the area over the arrest of their colleagues.
The gunshots were said to have thrown the presiding Magistrate, Theresa Otu, Court prosecutor, Barrister Emmanuel Yatsegha and motorists as well as residents into confusion this afternoon, as people ran helter skelter for safety.
The problem reportedly started when the FCT Ministerial Joint Enforcement Task-team on Covid-19 Restrictions arrested a policeman, by name, Agada Gabriel for the dual offences of not wearing facemask and overloading.
The culprit who was arrested around the premises of the court was said to have called on his colleague, Smart Jacob to help him evade arraignment.
The two were subsequently charged for not using their face mask in public and overloading.
The duo were said to have refused to pay their fines or engage in community service as directed by the Court.
According to Eyewitnesses in the area the duo mobilized gunmen from the Mobile Police Barracks in Dei-Dei who stormed the Mobile court and shot sporadically in the air.
The mobile court’s canopy was also dismantled.
normalcy has however been restored in the area.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the Task-team, Comrade Ikharo Attah who said he had been adequately briefed about the development, expressed confidence in the ability of the FCT Commissioner of Police, Bala Ciroma to apprehend the erring officers.
Attah said: “Yes, I have been briefed about the unfortunate development. The Head, Legal Department of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board AEPB, Barrister Cecilia Makoji called to notify me of the ugly incident, I can assure you that the FCT Police Commissioner, Mr Bala Ciroma, who is our overall chairman and supervises our activities is on top of the matter…”
