The National Orientation Agency, NOA, has called on residents of the Federal Capital Territory to always observe hygiene and avoid open defecation.
The Acting FCT Director of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, Mrs Mary Tanko made the call at a sensitisation programme in Gwagwalada Area Council .
The programme was organised to educate residents of the FCT on the implications of open defecation most especially in rural areas.
Mrs Mary Tanko who said open defecation poses a threat to the environment and human health, cautioned residents of the FCT against the act and encourage them to always maintain clean toilets in their homes at all times.
An Assistant Director of NOA, Mrs Olushola Akefe pointed out that many Nigerians still engaged in open defecation due to ignorance and inadequate functional toilets.
The Director Primary Health Care, Gwagwalada Area Council, Doctor Adeyemi Adeniran identified open defecation as some of the causes of diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera.
Some participants expressed satisfaction with the sensitization programme and pledged to support Government in ending open defecation in the FCT.
