The National Metallurgical Development Centre, NMDC, Jos says it has witnessed an upsurge in patronage from small and medium scale miners across the country.
Director General of the NMDC, Professor Linus Asuquo stated this in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Abuja.
Prof. Asuquo explained that many programmes had been introduced to upgrade facilities at the centre following the high demand of the services of the center.
The NMDC Director General stated that one of the programmes is to support the mining sector with research into innovative technologies, especially at the value addition and processing stages.
He explained that processing minerals involves purification and the extraction from their Ores which goes through many stages.
Prof. Asuquo who added that these processes could either be done hydro- metallurgically pyro-metallurgicaly or electron- Metallurgical to arrive at minerals needed said no country could make meaningful progress with out research and development.
The NMDC Director General stressed that many countries across the globe allocated four percent of their GDP to research and development but Nigeria has less than zero point one percent until recently that President Muhammadu Buhari increased it to zero point five percent which is still very low.
Prof Asuquo who described lack of political will and finances were affecting the Metallurgical sector stressed that no nation can achieve Industrialization without research and development.
” Metallurgical steel is the bed rock of any nation and no one can talk about industrialization without iron and steel” Prof Asuquo added.
According to Prof Asuquo the Centre has put in place measures to ensure the sector works optimally against all odds.
