NMDC partners DICON For Local Production Of ARMS And Ammunition

The National Metallurgical Development Centre , Jos, is partnering the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), Kaduna, to locally source for raw materials for production of arms and ammunition in the Country.

The Director-General and Chief Executive of NMDC, Prof. Linus Asuquo, made this known when he hosted a Technical Team from DICON led by the Team Leader, Commodore Friday Ekpa in Jos.

Professor Asuquo expressed optimism that the partnership would boost the nation’s economy and reduce dependence on importation of raw materials.

He explained that the agency had capacity to offer a wide range of services including the defence sector.

The NMDC Director General who explained that following the call by the President Muhammadu Buhari on the utilization of local raw materials the Centre was ready to partner DICON on the technical know- how available at the centre to boost the economy of the country.

“We offer mechanical tests and failure analysis of components and structures, We also conduct chemical analysis of materials, determination of calorific value of materials, carbon sulphur determination, casting and other metallurgical research and development studies, amongst others,” he said.

In his remarks, the Director General of DICON Major General Victor Ezugwu who was represented by Commodore Friday Ekpa said the collaboration would assist his agency in meeting the consumables needs of the Nigerian military in the fight against insecurity in the country.

He said doing so would boost the nation’s economy by reducing over dependence on importation of materials that the country could produce locally from countries such as China.

“DICON will maximise the opportunities seen in various departments of NMDC in cutting the cost of  importing some of the items used in the production of  arms and ammunition.

“Raw materials had been our major problem.We are looking inward to develop our local content and this agency has a lot that we can benefit from,” Ekpa said.

The DICON team also undertook a tour of the NMDC.
