NMDC Harps On More Investment In Research For Rapid Devt

The Director General, National Metallurgical Devlopment Centre, NMDC, Jos, Prof. Linus Asuquo has called for adequate intervention in Research and Development to boost the economy.

Professor Asuquo made this known when he hosted the Project Coordinator, World Bank Assisted Mineral Sector Support for Economic Diversification Project, MINDIVER, Mr Salim Sallam who came for project inspection at the centre in Jos.

He explained that research and development globally is capital intensive and for Nigeria to be emancipated economically there was need for government to re-awaken its interest in Research through proper legislation and more Budgetary appropriation to enable NMDC to be more result oriented.

The DG commended the MINDIVER project coordinator for the intervention in rehabilitating some of the buildings at the centre which included the WET Analysis Laboratory, SEM Building, Telecommunication Building, Foundry Workshop, Corrosion Laboratory, Clinic, Electric Arc Furnace Building and Public Toilet.

Prof Asuquo commended the Minister of Mines and Steel Development for approving MinDiver’s interventions in the area of rehabilitation and procurement of some laboratory equipment.

He also thanked government for slightly increasing the budgetry allocation to Research and development and appealed for increase of the allocation to 3 or 5 % as obtained in countries like Russia and South Africa.

The Project Coordinator, MinDiver, Mr Salim Sallam praised Prof. Asuquo for the laudable transformation at the centre which attracted MinDiver to procure some vital laboratory equipment and rehablitation of some specified buildings at the Centre.

According to Mr. Sallam, the purpose of the visit was to ascertain the completion of rehabilitation work at the Centre and supply of some of the procured equipment for possible commissioning and handing over back to NMDC for use.

In his vote of thanks, the Director of Finance and Human Resources Management in the centre, Dr Abubakar Yusuf Tumi appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing Prof. Asuquo to stir the boat of NMDC who according to him has breathed new life into the operations of the Agency.

Dr Tumi appealled to MinDiver to extend its generosity to the area of man power development in current Research and Development methodologies which according to him will enable members of staff to be at par with their counterparts in other industralized nations.
