NIWA Seeks More Funds To Deliver Its Mandate

The National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA has called for the support of the National Assembly to boost its appropriation to deliver on its mandate.
The Director General of the Authority, George Moghalu , made the call while defending the Twenty Twenty One budget of NIWA before the Senate in Abuja.

He commended President Muhammadu Buhari for appropriating the sum of N6.6bn budget for the Authority in the 2021 fiscal year.

The Director General told the panel that the N6.6bn capital component of the agency’s 2021 budget was essential to the completion of all ongoing projects and facilitate revenue generation.

Doctor Moghalu, who appeared before the Senate Committee on Marine Transportation to defend the Agency’s 2021 budget said the Federal Government allocation would help in deepening water transportation in the Country.

Mr.Moghalu, however, appealed to the Senate to assist in jacking up NIWA’s finances by putting necessary legislation in place to help develop and boost inland waterways in the Country.

The Managing Director said, “In line with the economic recovery growth plan of President Muhammadu Buhari, the authority reiterates its determination now more than ever, to upscale the development of Inland Water Transportation in Nigeria.

” I therefore seize this opportunity to appeal to the Senate to ensure and facilitate a conducive financial and legal environment that would provide the boost needed for NIWA to achieve its full potential. “
