The National Commission for Nomadic Education says it has adopted a strategy in addressing herders /farmers conflict through skills Acquisition training for Nomadic extension Agents with the aim of stepping down the training to the larger society.
The Chairman of the Governing Board of the Commission,Professor Gidado Tahir stated this during the opening ceremony of a three day workshop on skills Acquisition and Sustainable livelihood for Nomadic Education Extension Agents held in Kano.
Professor Gidado Tahir explained that in line with the Federal Government’s directives to find a lasting solution to farmer- Pastoralist conflicts, the agency was focusing on providing various Skills Acquisition training to extension Agents so that they pass the message to the grassroots for self reliance.
” Youths are the major catalyst of conflict among the herders and farmers that is why we implored the strategy of training them on conflict management and some modern farming techniques, livestock production so that they will stepdown the training to the larger society out there”
He said the farmers herders conflict was causing a serious threat to peace and security of the country hence steps needed to be taken in addressing the challenge.
In his remark the Executive secretary of the Commission, Professor Bashir Haruna Usman,represented by the Director Quality Assurance of the Agency Mr Akim Akinyosoye said in an effort to address some of the key challenges the commission had developed a variety of Approaches among which includes the promotion of community driven based programme.
He said the commissions initiative of training the Agents on skills Acquisition and Sustainable livelihoods Would go a long way in reducing poverty in Rural communities, and addressing challenges like kidnapping, cattle rustling,and rural banditry Among others.
Earlier the Kano State Commissioner of Environment, Dr Kabiru Ibrahim Getso represented by a Director in the Ministry, Alhaji Musa Shuaibu commended the Commission for organizing the training .
The three day workshop training attracted participants from all parts of the Federation .
