In Nasarawa State, over 75 Illegal Medical Clinics have been shut down in Karu Local Government Area.
The week long inspection of Private Health Facilities in the area by officials of the State Ministry of Health also led to the arrest of three persons suspected to be quack doctors who carried out a surgical operation on a 10 year old boy.
The inspection of Private Health Facilities across Nasarawa State was carried out by a team comprising different health experts, representatives of health associations, the media and security personnel to identify private health centres operating without approval as well as ensure those registered by Government were up to date in their yearly renewal of practising license.
Acting Director, Medical Services , Nasarawa State Ministry of Health , Dr. Damina John Ali who led the inspection team to private health centres , especially clinics, laboratories and scanning centres in Karu said over 35 registered private health centres were sealed for non yearly renewal of practising license which according to him indulged in quackery.
Similarly, over 40 unregistered private Health centres were uncovered and shut down immediately.
At a private health facility named, Grace Memorial Clinic, New Nyanya, which is a two bed room flat,a ten year old boy was found hanging between life and death due to a surgery carried out on him by the health workers who are not qualified medical doctors.
The inspection team leader, Dr. Damina John Ali ordered for immediate arrest of the suspected quack doctors and evacuated the patient to Gurku Medical Centre in Karu.
In an interview, the suspected quack doctors denied carrying out the surgery on the boy.
Speaking with Radio Nigeria in a telephone interview, the owner of the illegal health facility, Mrs Ladi Ode, a retired nurse who went into hiding after the arrest of workers in the facility said she established the health clinic to earn a living.
When Radio Nigeria visited Gurku Medical Centre two days later, the ten year old boy Emmanuel Chimezie who was recuperating appealed to Government to intensify efforts in checking activities of private health centres in the area.
The suspended quack doctors are in detention at Mararaba Divisional Police Station while their employer, Mrs Ladi Ode is still at large.
