Nasarawa State Government has called on the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN to give small scale farmers access to credit facilities as part of steps towards achieving food security.
Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Muhammad Ubandoma made the call during an interactive with farmers and CBN in Lafia the Nasarawa State capital.
The Secretary to the State Government, represented by Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Office, Mallam Usman Abu said agriculture remains one of the sectors with high potential hence the need to ensure commercial banks provide credit facilities to farners at single digit interest rates.
Branch Controller for CBN Lafia, Mr Samson Isuwa said the Apex Bank would continue to provide a level playing field for farmers to thrive given their vital role in the attainment of food sufficiency.
One of the farmers, Mr. Yusuf Yakubu who was awarded the best farmer of the year 2020 by CBN stressed the need for goverment to initiate programmes aimed at engaging more civil servants in farming.
