The National Mushroom Growers Association of Nigeria has called for the production of a viable National Mushroom Development Plan by the Federal Government to effectively maximize the economic potential of the plant.
In a communique at the end of its 3 days Summit, Exhibition and Awards in Abuja, the Association also called for strengthening and funding of research and development in the mushroom sub sector.
It stresses the need to encourage domestic consumption of mushroom and mushroom products in the country.
According to the Association, efforts should also be geared towards promoting partnership between Research and Development Institutions, policy makers and the organized private sector to boost the production of mushroom.
It advises Government at all levels to make mushroom farming activities lucrative by providing basic infrastructure such as rural roads network, power, water and access to inputs as well as encourage innovation to develop appropriate technology to grow the sub sector..
While advocating incentives and subsidies to stakeholders in the mushroom Industry, the Association said there should be linkage with malls, hotels, eateries for easy accessibility of the commodity.
The 3 day Summit, Exhibition and Awards with the theme ” Exploiting the Mushroom Value Chain For Nutrition, Medicine and Export” featured 6 paper presentations and was attended by Representatives of NEPC, SMEDAN, NAFDAC, BOA, FCCPC, RMRDC, FACAN, NYCC, AMAC, and other relevant organizations in the private sector and mushroom stakeholders.
