Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi has called for the review of the Highway Code and Stiffer penalty for traffic offenders to check carnages on the highway.
The minister made the call during this year’s Easter Mega Rally held at Jabi Central Park in Abuja.
Mr Amaechi who attributed most accidents in the country to reckless driving and indiscipline among road users said stiffer penalty would also check excesses of motorists and bring sanity on the highways.
He reiterated the present administration’s committement to invest more on road infrastructure to enhance Economic Growth in the country.
The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission FRSC, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi while calling on motorists particularly commercial drivers to avoid night journey said the commission would continue to embark on more sensitisation and advocacy to further reduce road accidents in the country.
He appealed to transport union leaders to always organise regular medical check to ascertain the health status of drivers.
Dr Oyeyemi advised road users to be patient and cooperate with companies handling road constructions for free flow of traffic during this Easter Celebration.
Speaking on behalf of the transport union, Alhaji Suleiman Dansaki appealed to the Federal Government to look into over 200 illegal motor parks threatening the safety of commutters in the Federal Capital Territory.
Representatives of the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Corps, FCT Vehicles inspectorate and other relevant security agencies pledged their total support towards ensuring effective traffic control during and after the Easter Special Operation.
