Chairman, Senate Committee on health, Dr Ibrahim Oloriegbe says improvement on local production of drugs will save the country’s foreign exchange and empower more people.
Dr Oloriegbe stated this at a phytomedicine training conference organized by the National institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development, NIPRID in Ilorin.
Senator Oloriegbe said various researches had revealed that more people are now patronizing herbal medicines hence the need to improve on its production became imperative
The policy maker noted that the Senate would always ensure that local drugs that are of high quality standard and certified by NIPRID are produced for the citizens.
The Senator representing kwara Central constituency in the National Assembly explained that the Senate had strengthened the institution by providing additional fund to improve its capacity for research into various herbal products and purchase new equipment that will assist in conducting research.
The Senator added that NIPRID would soon open its State office in Ilorin as one of the measures to bring research on local drugs closer to the people .
