A university Don, Professor John Alabi of the Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, Kogi State has called on the National Assembly to revisit the Electoral Act to allow for electronic transmission of election results by INEC without any interferance.
Professor Alabi made the call while delivering a lecture at the Grand Finale of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Press Week of the Kogi State Council.
While highlighting some improvements that have been recorded since 2011 in electoral reforms, Professor Alabi noted that the Electoral Act recently passed by the National Assembly was vague on electronic voting and irresponsive on campaign financing.
The University Don posited that complete electronic voting and transmission of results would ensure transparency and not subvert the will of the people.
He reiterated that people were at the centre of democracy and for it to thrive in Nigeria, the electoral reform should strengthen rather than undermine the electoral process.
President, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Chris Isiguzo acknowledged the pivotal role the media plays in governance and implored the Kogi state Government to redeem its pledges to the state Council of the NUJ.
Chairman of the occasion and House of Representatives member representing Yagba Federal constituency, Hon. Leke Abejide in a message to the event pointed out that electronic voting would go a long way in improving elections an lauded journalists for continually setting agenda for government in the country.
Kogi State Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello, represented by his Special Adviser on Public Relations, Ambassador Ahmed Bolori urged journalists in the state to abide by the ethics of the profession and promised renewed government partnership with the union.
Earlier in a remark, Chairman, Kogi State Council of the NUJ, Alhaji Adeiza Momoh Jimoh stated that members of the union had always discharged their duties effectively in a challenging environment.
Alhaji Momoh Jimoh commended the efforts of the Kogi state government in ensuring safety of citizens across the state.
