One hundred and twenty rural women from the seventeen Chiefdoms of the Federal Capital Territory and its environs have been trained in various skills to make them self reliant.
President, Helpline Foundation for the Needy, Dr Jumai Ahmadu in collaboration with ‘Make a Difference for the Needy and the Association of Traditional Rulers Wives in the FCT, organized the programme to mark the International Women’s Day in Abuja.
The training programme was put together to help the rural women acquire a skill, that would make them independent.
The women were taught how to make Air Fresheners, liquid soap, Izal, bleach, bags and shoes .
Speaking at the end of the training, Dr Jumai Ahmadu, said her NGO, did not only train the rural women but also give them starter packs and would monitor them to ensure they attain financial freedom.
“We decided to move beyond the yearly conferencing, to real empowerment… focusing more on what women can practically do that makes them better, that is why Helpline Foundation and its partners this year decided to go to the 17 chiefdoms in the FCT and some parts of Niger and Nasarawa states to see how we can empower them with skills…we have M&E team that monitors them to help fix challenges where necessary. “
The Founder, Make A Difference for the Needy, Mrs Maria Ogbonnaya-Ngwu noted that the role of women in nation building cannot be over emphasized.
She added that the training would help the women to earn an income to reduce their financial burdens.
Also, wife of the Chief of Garki , Mrs Hannatu Usman Nga kupi who commended the NGOs for reaching out to people at the grassroots, called on government for more support for women, with a prayer for Nigeria to overcome her challenges.

In a goodwill message, the Chairperson, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, FCT Chapter, Mrs Hannah Daniel who spoke on the 2021 IWD theme’ Choose to Challenge’ called for an enabling environment for women participation in nation building.
“women have been… Relegated to the background. In line with the theme ‘choose to challenge’ I choose to challenge early marriage. I advocate that women should be allowed to participate in governance, especially the girl child education. Because, if she’s educated she is empowered for greater assignment in the society.
Some of the participants that spoke with Kapital FM , expressed their gratitude to God for using the Organisers to touch their lives positively.
They promised to use the skills acquired for self reliance.
