The Inter Party Advisory Council of Nigeria (IPAC), has called on Nigerians and the International Community, to appeal to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to obey the unanimous Judgement of the Court of Appeal.

This is contained in a statement signed by the National Legal Adviser of IPAC, Mr. Chukwudi Ezeobika.

The statement urges the international community to add its voice to enable INEC reverse the deregistration of Twenty-two political parties in Nigeria.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission under Prof. Mahmood Yakub was Ordered by the Court of Appeal to immediately relist twenty-two political parties, which the Commission illegally and unconstitutionally deregistered on the 6th of February, 2020.

Notwithstanding the fact that the Order of the Court of Appeal has been duly served on INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakub and the Commission have failed to obey the Court Order by relisting the parties as Ordered.

It is pertinent to note that the continuous disobedience of this Order and Judgement of the Court of Appeal by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), portends a grave danger to the Nation’s democracy as well as the Rule of Law.

It explains that by disregarding the Rule of Law, INEC, contravened the Fundamental Rights’ Provisions especially Section 40 in the nation’s constitution which guarantees Freedom of Association.

“This request is premised on the need to deepen the Nigerian democracy and to ensure that the rights of over 200 million citizens of Nigeria are protected to effectively associate freely and participate effectively in the Nigerian political process.
