The House of Representatives Committee on Science Research Institutes has tasked heads of Institutes under its purview to ensure they obtain patent rights for outcomes of their research with a view to commercialising them.
The Chairman of the committee Olaide Akinremi stated this at the committe’s maiden interactive meeting with the Institutes under its oversight responsibility.
The lawmaker who noted that the institutes were established to play critical roles in driving the Nation’s Industrialization and technical progress stressed the need for improvement in internally generated revenue from the Institutes.
The members of the committee while reacting to presentations by different heads of the Institutes said, reeling out number of research findings and products developed by the Institutes was not good enough, as the agencies need to patent these findings and sell them to industry operators.
They also enjoined the agencies to exercise due diligence in carrying out their procurement obligations by ensuring that the dictates of the country’s procurement laws are followed to avoid legislative scrutiny.
The Chairman of the newly created committee thereafter requested for key Information and Documents that would enable the commitee carryout oversight functions effectively.
