The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the House of Representatives has condemned the suspension of twitter in Nigeria by the Federal Government.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Leader of the caucus, Kingsley Chinda from Rivers State.
The lawmakers who also threatened legal action against the Federal Government called on relevant authorities to immediately rescind this decision in the interest of free speech, rule of law, and democracy.
The caucus said the government’s action which lacked constitutional backing was capable of further dampening the image of Nigeria in the comity of Nations.
The lawmakers stressed that such a move remains a grave violation of the doctrine of separation of powers and an erosion of the rule of law.
The caucus expressed worry that the Federal Government appears to be more preoccupied with stifling the rights of Nigerian citizens to freely express themselves on the social media at a time when the country was bedeviled with widespread insecurity manifesting in banditry, kidnapping and activities of armed non-state actors across the Federation.
The PDP caucus therefore called on Presudent Muhammadu Buhari to immediately reverse the suspension placed on Twitter so as not to exacerbate the alreadey tensed situation In the country.
