The House of Representatives has inaugurated its adhoc committee set up to review the purchase, use and control of arms, ammunitions and related hardware by Military and Para Military Agencies in the country.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting, the Chairman of the committee Olaide Akinremi from Oyo state said this became necessary to ensure adequate and proper provision of equipment in the fight against insurgency.
The lawmaker who expressed concern that the Nigerian security buget remains the least globally said the house would continue to use it’s legislative powers to improve the county’s security.
In his submission the deputy Chairman of the committee and sponsor of the motion that called for the review, Ibrahim Aliyu from Sokoto State, said this move would provide an opportunity to reduce the proliferation of arms and ammunitions and would also address the spate of insecurity in the country.
Representatives of all the Service Chiefs, Inspector General of Police, Comptroller Generals of Customs, Immigration, Correstional Service, Director General Department of State Service, Ministers of Finance and Defence amongst others were present at the inauguration.
