Youths have been urged to shun illicit drugs and other substances that can endanger their lives.
Guests on “Perspectives” a Kapital FM Current Affairs Programme gave the advice while discussing on the effects of the influx of illicit drugs in the country.
One of the guests, a Public Affairs Analyst, Mr. Kelvin Fyneface who advised youths to avoid bad association noted that drug abuse remained a major threat in the society.
Mr. Fyneface enumerated some of the effects of drug intake to include violence, cultism and other related crimes in the society.
He however, called on parents and other stakeholders to work together towards addressing the menace of illicit drugs to safeguard the future of youths and the nation at large.
” The exponential growth of the nefarious drug activities can be directly linked to the upsurge in crime such as insurgency, Terrorism, kidnapping, cultism, political thuggery, rape and other vices bedeviling the nation” he added.
Mr. Fyneface who said the Government is not doing enough in terms of sanctions for offenders called for stringent measures and more political will to check the ugly trend.
Another guest on the programme, Founder of an NGO, Face of Change, Hajia Nike Abdulrahman stressed on the need for parents to always monitor the activities of their children by spending time with them to know their activities.
She pointed out that improper child upbringing and the breakdown of family relationship were some of the reasons youths indulged in drug abuse.
Hajia Abdulrahman who appealed to the present administration to attach importance to the welfare of youths also urged government at all levels to embark on Enlightenment campaigns on the dangers of drug abuse as well as put in place measures to curtail proliferation of illicit drugs in the country..
