The Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello has appointed a speech impaired young man, a cleaner, Mr Peter Aliyu, as his Senior Special Assistant on Sanitation.
His appointment was announced alongside other new appointees of government in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Folashade Arike Ayoade.
The statement says, the young man’s appointment is coming on the heels of the Governor’s observation on his consistency, diligence and dedication which also endeared bim to many other individuals who hailed his appointment.
It states that Governor Bello has always been known for his non-discriminatry approach to leadership and has ensured individuals of different groups and social strata were meted equal treatments across board.
The statement explains that the Governor in his usual disposition did not consider Mr. Aliyu’s disability as a hindrance for him to effectively serve but rather as a means to enlist him and prove that in Disability lies ability.
This gesture by the State Governor is not the first of its kind as it could be recalled that the Governor had in the past given special consideration to persons with disability by engaging them actively in his government and even signing bills that would enhance livelihood.
