Genetically Modified Organisms, GMOs are products of genetic engineering which is a technology that allows scientists to create plants, animals and micro organisms by manipulating genes at the cellular level in a way that is not possible via traditional or natural processes.

The Program manager of the lead coalition, Health of Mother Earth Foundation, HOMEF, Joyce Ebebeinwe while appreciating the efforts of government at all levels to promote agricultural activities , expressed concern about several approvals for GMOs without consideration to concerns raised by stakeholders on the safety of the products on human health.

Ms Ebebeinwe called for a ban on GMOs and repeal of the National Biosafety Management Agency Act which the groups claimed are flawed.
She also canvassed for adoption of agricultural practice such as agro-ecology.

On his part, the Deputy Director of Women Environmental Programme, Mr John Baaki who noted that GMO products cannot be replanted, cautioned Nigerians on the foods they consume.

Also, a nutritionist Dr Jackie Ikeotuonye emphasized the need for a policy for effective storage of natural seeds to save farmers and the environment.

A legal practitioner Mr David Ayo-Ogidiolu faulted the Biosafety Act whereby promoters of GMOs are also the regulators.
