FG To Evolve Health Insurance Scheme For Older Citizens

1 December 2020 By Florence Adewale.

The Federal Government has inaugurated a twenty two man committee to workout modalities for the provision of Health Insurance for retirees and the elderly.

Inaugurating the committee in Abuja, the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire said this became necessary to fast track Universal Health Coverage for healthier lives and well being of citizens of all ages.

The Minister said the COVID-19 pandemic had made it obvious that about sixty to eighty percent of older persons have preexisting medical conditions requiring regular medication.

He said introduction of the insurance for retirees and elderly was part of Government’s commitment to improve access to healthcare and promote wellbeing of ageing citizens through the provision of health insurance.

“The President subscribes to the view that Elders who have served the country be treated with respect and dignity and commits to investing in older persons in recognition of the contribution they continue to make to family, community and the nation. This aligns with global best practices in health care for older persons.
“Health and Wellbeing are crucial to older persons’ independence, autonomy and critical to maintaining inclusion and participation in community affairs.”

Responding, Chairman of the committee, Mr. Linus Awute appreciated the Federal Government for the confidence reposed in them and promised that the team would come up with sustainable implementation strategies.

“We shall be guided by the prescribed terms of reference, we shall also have more reliance on our own sense of responsibility to generate the team spirit that would foster a deep patriotic devotion required for our assignment.
We shall in addition to recommendations to government, come up with implementation strategies in order to forerun the final commitment of visionary initiative.”

Mr. Awute pledged to lead with humility on the basis of mutual respect and accountability.
