The National Commission for Persons with Disability is collaborating with the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria to provide accessible housing for members across the thirty six states of the Federation and the FCT.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mr James Lalu made this known during an inspection tour of some of the houses in Lugbe and Deidei in the FCT.
The tour of the housing facilities was to ensure that the houses conform with specifications to accommodate persons with Disability.
The Executive Secretary explained that in recognition of the rights of persons with Disability to shelter and other basic needs, the federal government through the act establishing the commission made it mandatory that all federal government housing projects must allocate specific percentage for persons with disability.
Mr Lalu while expressing satisfaction with the housing project at Dei-Dei, which he acknowledged met the needs of members, maintained that the commission would ensure the prototype is replicated in all states of the Federation.
He added that the housing would be on rent to own basis for civil servants and other members with reliable sources of income.
The project manager of the housing project at Dei-Dei, Mr Emmanuel Attai who expressed the readiness to complete the project in good time, pointed out that persons with disability were taken into consideration during the design and planning process.
