The FCT Adminstration says its Fire Service will be channeling efforts on fire prevention and enforcement, rather than fire fighting.
Director, FCT Fire Service, Mr Julius Opetunsin made this known in Abuja during a retreat organized for management staff of the Service in Karu Abuja.
Mr Opetunsin noted that the retreat would broaden the horizon of staff to carry out their duties as expected.
Mr Opetunsin who explained that FCTA had begun strategic moves to reposition the FCT Fire Service, expressed optimism that when people get the required knowledge on how to prevent fire outbreaks, its incidences would be drastically minimised.
According to him, FCT Fire Service from January to August, 2020, responded to about 356 fire cases in the territory without any casualty as a result of prompt response.
He however hinted that the Service would ensure that each household has at least a functional fire extinguisher, while a sensitization on how to use the fire extinguisher would follow.
“Fire extinguisher is not difficult to use… you have to remove the safety pins, after which you will push either the powder or carbon dioxide out of the cylinder, direct the nozzle to the seat of the fire, you don’t fight the fire at the surface… you only use fire extinguisher at the initial stage of fire outbreak when the fire is small” He said.
Director, Legal Services under the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), Isa Abdullahi was of the opinion that the inclusion of a home of fire extinguisher from the inception of granting building plan approvals would go a long way in the prevention of fire outbreaks in the territory.
Managing Director, Synergy Vista Concept Ltd, Mr. Ejimonu Charles who anchored the training stated that his firm was commissioned to reposition the FCT Fire Service to global standards.
