The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Caucus in the House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to handle issues arising from the EndSARS protest with utmost caution and also show respect for the Youths who are leaders of tomorrow.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Leader of the Caucus Kingsley Chinda from Rivers State.
The caucus notes with trepidation reports in the media in the past few weeks of actions taken by Government against #EndSARS protesters and alleged supporters.
The lawmakers cautioned that government must follow all democratic principles in dealing with those arrested due to their involvement in the protests, adding that the rule of law must be observed in whatever measure government is willing to take against them.
The statement while acknowledging the constitutional responsibility of government to maintain law and order, noted that this constitution must be discharged in a manner that accords respect for the rights of citizens and within the Rule of Law.
The caucus further called on the Federal Government to douse the palpable tension in the Country to forestall it growing into civil resistance of citizens.
“We do hope that the government retraces its steps and engages our youths as partners and not dissidents that must be treated with scorn and discredited for voicing their opinions on the many unfortunate happenings in the country”.
The lawmakers also admonished the Federal Government not to muddle up the genuine agitation of protesters with the subsequent hijacking of the protests by hoodlums who wrecked Havoc, including arson and looting of public and private property worth billions of naira.
