Ekiti State Government has solicited support of the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority, NEPZA in the establishment of Special Economic Zone in the State. The Governor of the State, Doctor Kayode Fayemi made the appeal when he visited the Managing Director of NEPZA, Professor Adesoji Adesugba in Abuja. Doctor Fayemi said the move became necessary to further enhance economic development of Ekiti State. According to the Governor, the Special Economic Zone will also ensure job creation and empowerment to teeming youths and women in the State. Governor Fayemi who said the State was blessed with knowledge and abundant agricultural resources explained that the Government had already established Ekiti Knowledge Zone as part of efforts to fast track economic development of the State. Doctor Fayemi who is also the Chairman of Nigerian Governors’ Forum, NGF said the Forum would require the technical assistance of NEPZA towards boosting the economic base of the 36 States of the Federation. Responding, the Managing Director of NEPZA, Professor Adesoji Adesugba expressed NEPZA’s readiness to assist Ekiti State Government towards realizing its dream of a Special Economic Zone. Professor Adesoji Adesugba who identified industrialization as the way to go advised other State Governments to key into NEPZA’s economic programmes to aid diversification of the nation’s economy. The NEPZA Managing Director stated that the time has come for Nigeria to emulate countries like China, Turkey, Ethiopia among others in the area of industrialization. He said this would help combat unemployment through technology and skills acquisition. The NEPZA Managing Director therefore advised Governments at all levels to give more priority to programmes that would compliment the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration on job creation, poverty reduction and economic development.
