COVID-19: Mobile Court Shuts Down Markets, Convicts Over 100 Violators

An Abuja  Mobile court has shut down the popular Wuse market, the UTC and the Murg shopping Plaza in Area Ten, for violating the Presidential regulations on COVID-19. 

The court also convicted about 100 persons who were arrested by the Enforcement team for not wearing facemasks in public places. 

This is coming days after the FCT Minister had warned that it would implement President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2021 COVID-19 Health Protection Regulations to the fullest.

The court presided by  Magistrate Idayat Akanni fined the violators N2,000 each, with an option of 2 weeks community service. 

She also  explained that the convicts were given lesser penalties,  because they were first offenders. 

The Head, Media and Enlightenment of FCTA COVID-19 Enforcement team, Comrade Ikharo Attah, said the negligence exhibited in the markets that were shutdown , could not have been overlooked by any responsible government as the markets disregarded the guidelines by all standards. 

Comrade Attah however said the court order could only be withdrawn when the management of the facilities comply with the regulations.
