Sixty indigent women from the six Area Councils in the FCT have been empowered with grinding machines to enable them earn income to assist their families.
The empowerment programme was organized by a Non Governmental Organization, Citizens Health Education and Development Initiative CHEDI, in Collaboration with the World Bank Staff Community Connections Campaign in Abuja
The Executive Director of the Non Governmental Organization, CHEDI, Mrs Selina Enyioha said the empowerment was to alleviate the plight of the less privileged in the society.
She explained that the beneficiaries were selected from the Six area councils through the social welfare departments.
Mrs Enyioha solicited more support from other national and multinational organizations to reach more vulnerable people.
The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development,Mrs Paulen Tallen who was represented by the Chief Social Welfare Officer,Mrs Hauwa Mustapha, noted that women empowerment was key to poverty reduction and stressed the need to empower more indigent women.
Some of the beneficiaries who expressed gratitude for the gesture promised to make good use of the grinding machines to support their families.
Ten grinding machines were given to each area council.
