Malami Calls For Synergy In Rule Of Law Implementation

The AGF who made the call at the conference of Attorneys General aimed at enhancing synergy between the federal and state governments in the administration of justice in Nigeria said an opportunity to explore areas of common interest for socio- legal development across states of the federation.

The Minister also seeks collaboration between States and the Federal Government in terms of prosecution and other means of combatting insecurity in the country.

The AGF said the fight against insecurity should not be left to the Federal Government alone, especially for offences falling within the jurisdiction of the States.

Malami added that in the quest to implement reforms in the administration of justice, one critical determinant factor remains adequate funding for the judiciary which also entails compliance with the provisions of the Constitution on financial autonomy for the judiciary and State legislatures, as a mark of true and holistic commitment to the ideals of democracy, good governance and the rule of law.

He said efforts are already ongoing by his Office and that of the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission to operationalize an increased salary and welfare package for Judicial Officers, as recently approved by the President and challenged all State Governments to ensure that they also diligently contribute their quota to the development of the judiciary.

On his part, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoolaa, represented by Justice Kudirat Kekere-ekun charged the Attorneys General not to allow the rule of law suffer under their watch.

He said, he was counting on state Chief Law Officers not to let the judiciary down in the area of welfare of Judges and other Judicial officers in their various states, even as he assured that he will not allow the judiciary under his watch to be whittled down by the executive.
