Teachers Canvass Support For Development Of Children

Teachers in the country want parents and relevant authorities to pay more attention on the development of children.

At a forum organised by the Universal Peace Federation in Abuja, the teachers maintained that proper attention on the activities of children would help identify vices such as; banditry, kidnapping, thuggery and other crimes capable of truncating the peace and development of the nation.

Some of the teachers blamed the current spate of moral decadence among school children to failure of relevant Stakeholders to play the mentorship role expected of them.

They said “although moral training of children was a collective responsibility, parents were to blame substantially over the current situation, because to some extent, most parents have relinquished their responsibilities of moral upbringing to teachers, who had to be playing the roles of ensuring academic advancement”

“Every school has Parent Teachers’ Association (PTAs) and School Based Management Committees (SBMCs), which have critical roles to play and these stakeholders meet to address issues affecting the school system, how ever parents owe it a duty to monitor the activities and behaviour of their children while in school so as to detect and correct areas of concern”

Meanwhile others, argued that “teachers were supposed to be like parents to the children under their care and should discipline them when they misbehaved But under the current realities no teacher can afford to touch anybody’s child in the name of discipline because some parents could mobilise thugs to attack the teachers”

The Sub- regional director of the UPF Rev George Ogurie, who decried the rate of attrocities in the country, said teachers are very instrumental in shaping the behaviors of young people in school to address most of the challenges.

“The family has a task to raise future leaders, but hustling and lack of time for adequate parental nurturing of children is lacking, spouse abuse, child abuse are also part of the problems that put the family under stress, leading to family breakdown “

“Issues such as divorce, infidelity, cyber bullying, hate speeches, improper dressing, truancy, teenage pregnancy, are part of challenges affecting societal values, we all must take proactive steps to ensure that the right thing is done and the time is now, that was why these teachers training is being organized”

Rev Ogurie, expressed believe that the teachers would translate lessons from the workshop to the classrooms.

The three days work shop, which had top government functionaries and religious leaders in attendance, ended with a call on government to provide legal framework and policies on handling children within and outside the home.

Highlights of the event was the development of an action plan and framework to guide policy makers on effective implementation of policies, to curb issues of social vices in the country
