UATH Tasks Nursing Mothers On Exclusive Breastfeeding
The Head of Paediatric Department, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Dr Onalo Richard has advised nursing mothers to adhere strictly to exclusive breastfeeding for development and health benefits of their children.
Dr. Richard gave the advice at a baby show organised by the Department for nursing mothers to mark the 2022 World Breastfeeding Week in Gwagwalada Abuja.
The Head of Peadiatric Department said the baby show was part of activities to promote exclusive breastfeeding among nursing mothers in the country.
Dr Richard who stated that the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding to the health and growth of the child cannot be over emphasized explained that the first six months of exclusive breastfeeding remain the only source of natural and effective source of nutritious food for children.
According to him, exclusive breastfeeding brings up the personality of the child, promotes bonding between mother and child, develop the brain of the baby and enhance healthy living.
He noted that the move would also alleviate the economic burden of purchasing canned foods and safeguard the baby from diseases.
Speaking on the theme of this year’s celebration “Step Up For Breastfeeding: Advocate and Support’, Dr. Offiong Uduak also of the Paediatric Department, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital called for continuous enlightenment campaign on exclusive breastfeeding among nursing mothers towards boosting the state of health of Nigerian children.
Dr. Offiong who expressed concern over the attitude of some nursing mothers to exclusive breastfeeding said the Hospital would continue to embark on programmes that would encourage exclusive breastfeeding in the country.
According to her, the 2 hours break given to working mothers by the Federal Government signifies the importance attached to exclusive breastfeeding.
Some nursing mothers at the baby show commended the Department of Paediatric for the enlightenment campaign saying it has further broadened their understanding of exclusive breastfeeding.
Highlights of the baby show was a Breastfeeding competition and presentation of prizes for the well breast fed baby
