FCT Minister, Candido Task NIPSS On Strengthening Governance

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has tasked participants of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) to suggest possible ways to tackle challenges confronting governance at the Local Government level .

The Minister gave the charge when delegates of the Senior Executive Course 44 members from NIPSS, led by Professor Sunday Ochoche paid him a visit in Abuja.

Malam Bello explained that Local Governments, or Area Councils, as they are called in the FCT, brings government closer to people at the grassroots through provision of the dividends of democracy.

Speaking on the theme of the 2022 Senior Executive Course which is “Strengthening Local Governance in Nigeria: Challenges, Opinions and Opportunities”, the FCT Minister pointed out that governance at the local level was being confronted with many challenges that must be tackled head on.

According to the Minister some of these challenges include Education, agriculture, primary health care and security.

In his remarks, Prof. Sunday Ochoche, expressed appreciation to the FCT Minister for the calibre of participants sponsored by the FCTA to the Institute.

He explained that every year, very senior and accomplished men and women from different sectors dedicate 10 months deliberating on critical national issues and proffering ways to advance the Nigerian project.

He stressed that effective local governance involved the Federal, State and Local Governments, traditional institutions, as well as Non-Governmental Organizations.

In a remark, FCTA Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olusade Adesola said the Administration would be happy to tap into the wealth of knowledge and experience of the participants to build an FCT all Nigerians would be proud of.

At the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, the Chairman, Adamu Candido called on the NIPSS delegates to use their research findings to proffer solutions to some vital national issues.

Candido particularly advocated for the autonomy of Area councils in the FCT to enable them function optimally.

Candido also used the medium to commend FCTA leadership under Malam Muhammad Musa Bello and Dr Ramatu Tijani Aliyu for always releasing the monthly JAAC allocations to Area Councils promptly .

He however appealed to FCTA to resolve and release the backlog of Internally Generated Revenue ( IGR) shares that was due to Area Councils .

” unfortunately my successor will meet liabilities. That was not my plan. Such IGR would have been used to clear debt owed contractors if released to the council. ..we have also appealed to FCTA that when they allocate land, farmlands for agricultural activities should be considered” Candido said.
