Therapist Calls For Improved Mental Health In Nigeria

A Therapist, Mrs Mima Odiegwu has called for measures to ensure effective mental health in the country.

Mrs Odiegwu made the call while briefing newsmen in Abuja.

The Therapist said the call became necessary towards assisting people with cases of mental health in the society.

Mrs Odiegwu stated that she had over the years rendered medical assistance to about 600 victims of mental Illness across the country.

The Therapist who is also a Television Host of Lifelines With Mima expressed concern over increased cases of domestic violence which she attributed as one of the causes of mental Illness among couples.

According to her, 50 percent of married women and 25 percent of married men have in the last one year been victims of domestic violence in the country.

She equally attributed illiteracy and poverty among couples as major reasons of crisis in the home.

Mrs Odiegwu stressed the need for an effective justice system towards combating the menace in the country.

She identified advocacy campaigns by Government and Civil Society Organizations as key to addressing the societal problem that is rampant among Nigerian families.

She therefore advised Nigerians to join the campaign against domestic violence for Improved mental health in the country.
