NASS To Transmit Re-amended Constitution To States In February

The National Assembly is to transmit the re-amended 1999 Constitution to the State Houses of Assembly for consideration at the end of this month.

The Deputy Speaker House of Representatives, Ahmed Wase, who is the Co-Chairman Adhoc Committee on Constitutional Amendment, stated this at a retreat organized by the joint committee to harmonize the document.

Wase reiterated the determination of the National Assembly to review the Nation’s Constitution to meet current realities.

Also speaking the CoChairman of the Committee, deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege said apart from overhauling the Constitution, the amendment will assist in giving Nigerians a people oriented constitution.

Omo-Agege also explained that the amendments would be concluded as scheduled to ensure the passage before the end of the ninth national assembly.

The retreat was organised is to consider the report of the two Adhoc Committees, clause-by-clause, and to harmonize the differences.

Among the areas being amended were the local government autonomy, special seats for women in the parliament, independence of the judiciary, citizenship of Nigeria among others.
