The Coalition of Societies for the Rights Of Older Persons In Nigeria, COSROPIN, has felicitated with christian older persons in the country on the occasion of this year’s Christmas celebration.
In his Christmas message in Abuja, the President of COSROPIN, Senator Eze Ajoku stressed the need for older persons to give thanks to God for sparing their lives to witness another Christmas celebration.
He advised christians to use the occasion in showing love and care to older persons around them especially the less privileged ones to enable them have a sense of belonging during the celebration.
Senator Ajoku explained that the year 2021 had been eventful as the dawning of an era of various initiatives by Government and stakeholders in advocacy and development of policy frameworks fo the welfare, well being and dignity of of Older Persons.
“I want to say that Government has taken COSROPIN as a strategic partner and this is evidence in the fact that in six years we have been able to gain such reputation as the voice of older persons and Government is working with us in everything that they are doing towards the care of the elderly. Therefore we want to thank the Government of President Muhammadu Buhari for doing a lot for older persons this year” Senator Ajoku emphasized.
The President of COSROPIN highlighted that President Muhammadu Buhari in 2017 signed into law the Act on Senior Citizen Centre and also in 2018 signed the Health Bill that allows one percent consolidated fund for the care of the vulnerable while this year approved the National Policy On Ageing and inaugurated the NSCC Board and provided it with a take off grant.
He stated that the Coalition is also working with Government and other stakeholders towards providing health insurance for Nigerian retirees and the elderly as part of efforts to improve their healthy living.
The President of COSROPIN commended President Muhammadu Buhari for all these supports to older persons and hope that he will further support the Coalition through the signing of it’s Bill on the rights and privileges of older persons in Nigeria into law.
” The President was full of praise for the Minister of Humanitarian, Disaster Management and Social Development for her dynamic leadership and dogged support that got the President to do all these for older persons and greatly appreciated her respect for cosropin to have consented to our advocacy and request to actualize both the National Policy and inauguration of the Board as per her assurance to COSROPIN in August last year at our meeting with her” he stated.
He pointed out that her support had given senior citizens in the country a sense of belonging in the country because
COSROPIN today is a strategic partner of government.
“I’m glad to say that COSROPIN is a member of the Board of Senior Citizen Centre and also a member of the National Advisory Council On Ageing as well as member of Ministerial Committee of Ministry of Health for the provision of health insurance for retirees and elderly people in Nigeria, and also a member of the Ministerial Committee On Nigeria Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent and Elderly Health Plus Nutrition and also involve in the Technical Working Group on Population” He stressed
Senator Ajoku said COSROPIN would further intensify its advocacy in the coming year and consolidate on its successes so far recorded to enhance the welfare of older person in the country
