The FCT Social Development Secretariat, SDS, says a total number of two thousand, four hundred and seventy – one beggars with three thousand eight hundred and eighty one destitutes, the mentally challenged, drug addicts, commercial sex workers and under aged children were evacuated in the last twelve months in Abuja
Secretary, FCT (SDS), Hajiya Hadiza Kabir who made this known at a media parley in Abuja, said the evacuation was part of the Adinistration’s efforts to check miscreants in the FCT.
Giving the breakdown, Hajiya Hadiza said the Secretariat in the last twelve months, rehabilitated one thousand and ninety seven destitute, two thousand and four mentally challenged persons, two hundred and two drug addicts, five hundred and seven commercial sex workers and seventy one under aged children.
She hinted that the sum of twenty four million naira (N24m) has so far been spent on apprehending, evacuating, rehabilitating and repatriating commercial sex workers to their various states of origin.
The Secretary of SDS explained that the rehabilitation of the down trodden and referral of cases to liaison offices, hospitals, orphanages, the police and immigration remained Paramount to the Secretariat.
Hajiya Hadiza called for the support of all stakeholders in ensuring sanity in Abuja.
She said the secretariat also trained and gave starter packs to 452 commercial sex workers who were recently taken off the streets .
On her part, the Director of Gender, Mrs. Grace Adayilo said FCTA was championing the fight against Gender Based Violence through regular sensitisation .
She assured that the Secretariat would not rest on its oars until issues of GBV and violation of human rights is minimized to the bearest minimum.
Also speaking, Director of Tourism, Mrs Ijeoma Ochuonu, said the FCT Administration has commenced processes to make Mpape Crush Rock site much safer to attract tourists from all works of life.
