By Remi Johnson

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has again beamed it searchlight on hoodlums hideouts around the popular Mpape CrushRock tourism site pulling down several shanties and some structures said to be sitting on an unauthorised places.

The Senior Special Assistant to FCT Minister on Monitoring, Inspection and Enforcement, Comrade Ikharo Attah who led the City Sanitation Team on an enforcement to the area, lamented that most of the demolished structures had been rebuilt by residents, a development he described as height of irresponsibility and taking laws into one hand.

The enforcement operation which lasted for many hours, leveled the allegedly criminal hideouts and illegal structures rebuilt by roadside traders, after they were cleared few months ago.

Comrade Attah explained that Mpape Crush Rock water site which had been identified by FCTA had attracted the attention of the private sector investors, but activities of hoodlums in the area have remained a major challenge.

According to Comrade Attah, the processes of developing its full tourism potentials, had commenced..

He also hinted that the two Ministers of the FCT were working hard to commence construction of the Mpape road projects,  but residents have continued to contravened development plans in the area, pointing out that the essence of revisiting the area was to clear all forms of encumbrances around the tourism site to ensure that tourist and fun seekers that may visit the site this festive period were safe from hoodlums harassment and molestation .

Comrade Attah said many tourists had been attacked at the site, including one of the media aides to the Deputy Senate President,  Lara Wise.

” The FCT Administration cannot watch criminal elements continue their terror reign… Looking around here, you will see the activities of scavengers and hoodlums, making tourism activities here very difficult. We have cleared here before and these hoodlums left, but unfortunately, they are regrouping. The hoodlums have been snatching peoples bags and making them pay certain amount”.Attah said.

Comrade Attah added that the Divisional Police Officer in Mpape, CSP Adamu Faisa,  had earlier called for the dislodgement of the hoodlums to secure the area.

Also speaking, the Deputy Director of Abuja Environmental Protection Board, Mr Kaka Bello,  said his team would redouble efforts to sustain the present ambience and sanity around the tourism site.
