The Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Mr Sunday Dare has reiterated the commitment of the present administration towards sports development most especially at the grassroots.
Mr Dare stated this in Abuja during the presentation of trophies and introduction of Icon of Ijaw as well as awards On Nanaye Dickson wrestling competition.
The Minister who commended Senator Seriake Dickson for the annual wrestling competition said the Federal Government would continue to collaborate with necessary stakeholders towards encouraging wrestling as a viable sporting activities in the country.
He identified sports as veritable tool for unity, peace and national development.
Mr Dare therefore called for public private sector participation in repositioning the nation’s sports sector.
On his part, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Sports and Youth Development, Senator Obinna Ogba promised more legislative support towards sports development in the country.
Senator Ogba also commended Senator Dickson for organising the wrestling competition.
Earlier, the organizer of the Nanaye Dickson Wrestling Competition and Senator from Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson said the competition was aimed at promoting sporting activities among youths in the state.
Senator Dickson who is also the former Governor of Bayelsa state stated that the move was equally aimed at promoting ijaw cultural heritage through traditional wrestling.
According to him, the competition has gone a long way in fostering the spirit of unity and peaceful coexistence among people of the State.
He used the occasion to reiterate his commitment to programmes that would better the lots of his people.
The event which was attended by first class traditional ruler in Bayelsa State featured presentation of trophies and awards.
