INEC Take Steps To Strengthen Democratic Governance

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC says it will continue to evolve strategies to check electoral malpractices and strengthen democratic governance in the country.

Chairman, INEC Voter Education Committee, Mr Festus Okoye who stated this at the opening of a one day Implementation meeting for the FCT Area Council Election in Abuja said the newly introduced Biomodal Voter Accreditation System assisted the commission to conduct credible governorship election in Anambra.

Mr Okoye while calling on Stakeholders to support the Commission in conducting hitch free FCT Area Councils Poll maintained that INEC would also use the Biomodal Voter Accreditation System in the conduct of the February 2022 Election.

The INEC Voter Education Committee Chairman emphasized that the commission would provide necessary information to guide stakeholders especially the National Orientation Agency and the National Youth Service Corps for effective communication with the electorate during the poll.

In his welcome address the FCT INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner Mr Yahaya Bello said adequate measures were being adopted to educate political parties and residents on the locations of about three thousand polling units including the newly created ones in the Six Area Councils.

My Yahaya Bello said regular meetings were also being organised with security agencies, the traditional institution and political parties to ensure the safety of INEC staff and electoral materials during the election.

The Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi commended INEC Staff for their commitment towards deepening democracy in the country.

Mr Oyekanmi however appealed to them and other stakeholders to keep abreast with innovations and work together to conduct an inclusive Area Councils election come February Twenty Twenty Two..

A Director in the National Orientation Agency Mrs Comfort Ogumola said the agency would use its various platforms to mobilize, educate and create awareness on Government programs and policies at the grass roots.

Also speaking, A Representative of the FCT National Youth Service Corps, Mrs Olayinka Abdulwahab noted that a portal had been created to register Corps Members to be engaged during the election.
