Bill To Establish Construction Materials Standardisation Agency Passes 2nd Reading

A Bill for an Act to Establish Construction Materials Standardization Agency has passed Second Reading in the House of Representatives.

The Bill which seeks to standardize and control the use of materials for the construction Industry in Nigeria, is sponsored by member representing Kaura Federal Constituency of Kaduna State Gideon Gwani.

In his lead debate the lawmaker who is the Minority Whip explained that the bill when passed will provide a legal framework for a regulatory agency in the construction industry.

He added that the agency when established will ensure the usage of quality, sustainable and standard construction materials in Nigeria thereby reducing the threat of building collapse nationwide.

The Minority Whip further noted that the piece of legislation became imperative following the incessant building collapse across the country.

Ruling, the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila who presided over plenary, said the bill will go beyond the purview of the Standard Organization of Nigeria SON, to ensure the safety of lives and properties of Nigerians.

The Bill was thereafter referred to the House committee on Housing and Industry for more legislative action.
