The Kaduna State Caucus of the House of Representatives, has raised concerns over the continuous banditry and kidnapping on the Abuja-Kaduna highway.
The Chairman of the Caucus, Garba Datti stated this while briefing newsmen in Abuja.
According to him the state of insecurity along the road has severely affected Nigerians as they have to either not travel or opt for means of transportation beyond their means or convenience.
“In the last five (5) days, it has reached its deplorable and lamentable peak as the spate of attacks, killings, abductions, kidnappings and robberies had engulfed the Abuja-Kaduna Highway and resulted in a crisis of frightening and calamitous proportions”
The lawmaker noted that the Abuja-Kaduna highway remained a critical gateway between the North and the Southern parts of Nigeria and the major link road to the North West and North East as well as to many neighbouring countries.
He added that the highway being the key outlet for the transportation of persons, goods and services across Nigeria, experiences extraordinary traffic hence the need to secure the road.
” Also the killings and maiming on our highways severely infringe upon the right to life of Nigerians as guaranteed under section 33(1) of the Constitution. We must caution that the situation on the highways, particularly the Abuja-Kaduna Highway, if not immediately addressed, spells doom for the economy and the social life of Nigerians”
Datti while urging Security agencies to intensify their efforts in addressing the menace called on Nigerians to remain Calm and believe in the Federal Government as it works to ensure the safety of their lives and property.
